Ewing, NJ – Stockton University (9-8, 4-7 NJAC) stayed close to The College of New Jersey (14-5, 10-2), the second-place team in the NJAC, but fell short 77-71. The game featured seven lead changes and five ties, the last of which came with just over five minutes to play.
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor Plainsboro South) topped four Ospreys in double digits with 13 points.
Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) tallied 11 points and five assists followed by
Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) with 11 points and four assists.
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) chipped in with 10 points.
Stockton trailed by 11 midway through the first half but rallied to take a brief 32-31 lead on a layup by Jerkins with 1:15 on the clock. The Lions responded by scoring the last five points of the half and the Ospreys faced a 36-32 deficit at the break. Johnson paced Stockton with seven first-half points.
The Ospreys fell behind by seven early in the second half but rallied again, this time pulling ahead 57-54 on a three-pointer by
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) with 9:39 to play in the game. Harmon finished with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds on the night.
After TCNJ went back up by four, another Harmon three-pointer was followed by a basket from Catanoso that gave Stockton a slim 64-63 edge at the 6:13 mark. The Ospreys then were outscored 8-2 in the next three minutes as the Lions took the lead for good and downed Stockton 77-71.
Stockton returns home to host William Paterson in an NJAC game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
