Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-9, 4-8 NJAC) could not overcome cold shooting in the second half and 19 turnovers that led to 28 points as the Ospreys suffered a 79-72 setback to William Paterson (10-10, 6-7 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) and
Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) topped the Ospreys with 17 points each. Harmon grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, with Ford dishing four assists to top all players.
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) tallied 15 points and
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) chipped in with 11 points.
Stockton started strong, jumping out to a 25-16 lead with 7:48 remaining in the first half, before the Pioneers got going. The visitors ran off 11 straight points in a span of 2:10 to take a 27-25 lead.
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) stopped the spurt with a layup to knot the game at 27-27.
The squads traded hoops until Ford hit a three-pointer with 39 seconds left to give Stockton a 40-38 lead at the break. Jerkins, Ford and Johnson led the Ospreys with nine points each and Stockton shot 50% (15-30) from the field during the half.
The second half saw the Ospreys go cold from the field, unable to score a basket for 4:48 until a Ford bucket finally got Stockton on the board and cut the margin to 44-42 in favor of the Pioneers. Another Ford basket closed the gap to one point 49-48 with 12:30 left in the game but Stockton could not regain the lead. A 21-7 run by William Paterson stretched the margin to 70-55 with 5:07 left.
The Ospreys put on one final run to close to 77-72 with 48 seconds remaining as two treys by Johnson and four points by Barnes spurred a 17-7 run. A missed three-pointer on Stockton's next possession halted the comeback try and the Ospreys fell 79-72.
Joseph Taylor led the Pioneers with a game-high 40 points, with Zach Frick adding 14 markers as the only two Pioneers in double figures. Richy Espinal led all players with nine rebounds. William Paterson shot a blistering 58.3% (14-24) from the floor during the second half.
Stockton will have a quick turnaround as they will face Montclair State at home on Monday night. The game is a makeup from a postponement on January 8. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
