Stockton Holds Off Montclair State 71-67

Galloway, NJ - Stockton University (10-9, 5-8 NJAC) grabbed the lead for good with 2:42 remaining and held on for a narrow 71-67 win over Montclair State (10-10, 6-7 NJAC) on Monday night. Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) exploded for a career-high 29 points as Stockton snapped a four-game losing skid.
 
Harmon shot 9-13 from the floor including 7-11 from three-point range. He also was a perfect 4-4 at the line and grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Stockton jumped out to an early 15-7 lead on a Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) jumper before the Red Hawks rebounded with an 11-3 run to knot the game for the first of five times at 18-18. Montclair stretched the margin to 36-31 before settling for a 38-36 advantage at the break. Harmon led all scorers with 15 markers to aid the Ospreys.
 
Harmon continued his hot shooting by scoring Stockton's first eight points of the second half, giving Stockton a brief 43-41 lead with 15:06 left in regulation. The Red Hawks ran out to a five-point advantage at 51-46 before baskets by Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) and Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) plus another trey by Harmon put the Ospreys back in front 53-51 at the 9:20 mark.
 
The teams then traded baskets for nearly seven minutes. With the visitors up 61-60, Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) banged a three-pointer to give Stockton the lead for good and Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) followed by a layup to put Stockton up 66-62 with 1:54 remaining.
 
Five points by Montclair State's Brandon Channer offset a Jerkins basket to trim the Ospreys' lead to 68-67 with 39 seconds left. Catanoso hit one of two foul shots for a 69-67 edge and freshman Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) blocked a last attempt at a tie by Channer with seven seconds on the clock. Catanoso closed out the game by hitting two more foul shots after the block to give Stockton the 71-67 win.
 
Catanoso finished 13 points and a team-high four assists. Jerkins grabbed seven rebounds to tie Harmon for the team lead. Ferebee swatted three shots by Montclair State to top all players.
 
Jovanni Chatham led the Red Hawks with 16 points while Daniel Ramis hit four three-pointers for 12 markers on the night. Jarret Bogus added 11 points and Channer pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
 
Stockton next game will be Wednesday night when the Ospreys travel to Rutgers-Camden. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
