Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-10-1, 4-5 NJAC) ended the regular season with a 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden (7-9, 3-6 NJAC) in a conference game at G. Larry James Stadium. For the second straight match,
Michelle Sander scored the game-winner on a free kick.
With the triumph, Stockton nailed down the No. 5 seed for the NJAC Tournament, which begins on Saturday with the Ospreys playing at No. 4 seed Kean University.
Sander's goal came after 64 scoreless minutes. A Rutgers-Camden foul gave the sophomore a free kick straight on from about 30 yards away. Sander booted a shot that floated in on goal and went through the keeper's hands to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.
Rutgers-Camden had its best chance to tie five minutes later as Kaitlyn Ennis got an open look from the right wing, but her 15-yard shot just missed wide left. Led by backs
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.),
Justine Mangiafico (Brick/Brick Memorial) and
Alexa Simonetti (Wayne/Wayne Valley), Stockton held the Scarlet Raptors to just one shot attempt in the last 20 minutes to clinch the 1-0 victory.
The first half was uneventful, with Stockton possessing the ball most of the time but having difficulty generating opportunities against the defensive-minded Scarlet Raptors. The Ospreys managed the only four shots of the half, however just one went on goal.
Brenna Clowney (Mullica Hill/Clearview) hit the crossbar 51 seconds into the second half and Cassidy McSorley fired a shot high a minute later as the teams exchanged early scoring chances. Stockton stayed on the attack until Sander finally broke through with the game-winner at 64:20.
The Ospreys held a 16-5 advantage in shots during the game. Stockton goalkeeper
Nicole Pallante (Brick/Brick Twp.) needed just two saves to record her sixth shutout of the season. Katie Gurba made five stops for Rutgers-Camden.
Stockton heads into the NJAC Tournament having won four of its last five matches. The Ospreys will play at Kean on Saturday in the first round. The start time is TBA.
