Stockton Advances in NJAC Tourney on Penalty Kicks

Union, NJ – Stockton University (9-10-2) battled through 110 minutes of scoreless play and advanced to the NJAC semifinals by topping No. 4 seed Kean University (11-6-2) 6-5 in penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie.

Freshman Kara Staudenmayer (Cinnaminson/Paul VI) converted her penalty kick in the sixth round and Nicole Pallante (Brick/Brick Twp.) followed with a save on Kean's sixth attempt to end the shootout and send the Ospreys into the next round.

Both teams were successful on all five of the their attempts in the five-round shootout. Dasey DiElmo (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands), Mairead McKeary (Cranford/Cranford), Michelle Sander (Ewing/Notre Dame), Salena LeDonne (Parsippany/Parsippany) and Katie Reed (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) all buried penalty kicks for the Ospreys.

Staudenmayer made her attempt in the sudden-death phase and thenPallante stopped the Cougars' final shot and sent the Ospreys on to the semifinals.
 
The first half saw the Cougars take control, outshooting the Ospreys by a 10-6 margin and holding a slim 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Both teams put three shots each on net but could not break through for a score.
 
Stockton picked up the pace through in the second half as they fired off seven shots, with five going on net. Kean's defense had the answers to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. DiElmo put three shots on net in a span of 12 minutes late in the period.
 
Brenna Clowney (Mullica Hill/Clearview) got Stockton's last shot on goal in the 85th minute but was turned away once more. The Cougars fired a final volley with 39 seconds to go, but the attempt missed to the right and sent the game into overtime at 0-0.
 
Kean had the better of the play during the two overtime periods as they outshot Stockton 7-0 but only one found its way on net. Pallante made the save and the contest went to a shootout.
 
Pallante made six saves in net for Stockton, while her counterpart Casey McDonnell kicked out eight Osprey attempts on the evening.
 
Stockton will travel to the top-seeded The College of New Jersey on Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
