Rochester, NY – Stockton University (4-1) opened the University of Rochester Holiday Inn Tournament with a convincing 77-50 win over Keuka College (2-2). The starting backcourt of
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and
Onnir Kendall (Williamstown/Williamstown) led the Ospreys to victory.
Johnson went 5-11 from three-point range and scored a career-high 22 points. Kendall played another strong all-around game, tallying 15 points, a career-high nine rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Kelvin Tull (Millville/Millville) tied his career best with nine markers and
Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) went 3-6 from behind the arc for a career-high nine points.
Kendall sank two buckets and Taylor hit a three-pointer during a 9-0 run that gave Stockton a 17-7 lead, and the Ospreys never looked back. The margin grew to 18 at 29-11 on a layup by Johnson.
Keuka pulled within seven before Stockton scored the final seven points of the half, the last three of which came on a trey by Taylor with two seconds left for a 38-24 lead at the break. Kendall and Johnson scored 12 and 10 first-half points respectively.
The Ospreys scored the first seven points of the second half, including a three-pointer by Johnson and traditional three-point play by Kendall, for a 45-24 advantage. From there, the rout was on. Stockton led by more than 20 for the last 15:31 of the game and coasted to the 77-50 victory.
Stockton will play tournament host the University of Rochester in the championship game of the Holiday Inn Tournament tomorrow at 3 pm.
