Rochester, NY – Stockton University (4-2) got off to a slow start and could not recover as the Ospreys fell to #16 Rochester (4-1) 64-56 in the title game of the Rochester Holiday Inn Tournament. The 56 points was a season low for Stockton through the first six games.
Kelvin Tull (Millville/Millville) went 5-5 at the line and scored a career-high 10 points.
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) also netted 10 markers and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Ferebee was 3-4 from three-point land.
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and
Onnir Kendall (Williamstown/Williamstown), who led the Ospreys to victory yesterday, were named to the All-Tournament Team. Johnson and Kendall tallied eight and seven points respectively against the Yellowjackets.
Stockton scored just 11 points in the first 11 minutes and fell behind 27-11. An 8-0 run that featured three-pointers by Johnson and
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) closed the gap to 33-24 but Rochester finished the half with a 7-2 spurt that made it 40-26 at the break. Although the Ospreys went 6-13 (46.2%) from three-point range, they were hampered by 11 turnovers.
Stockton began the second half with three-pointers by Harmon, Ferebee and Johnson that sliced the deficit to five at 40-35. The Yellowjackets reestablished a double-digit lead before the Ospreys tried one more rally.
Another three-pointer by Ferebee made it 53-48 with 5:31 to go. Rochester scored the next five points to thwart the comeback try and Stockton did not get closer than eight the rest of the way to the 64-56 setback.
The Ospreys return to NJAC play on Wednesday with a road game at The College of New Jersey at 8 pm.
