Ewing, NJ –Stockton University (4-3, 0-2 NJAC) continued its busy early-season schedule with its seventh game in the first 15 days of the season, falling 95-84 to The College of New Jersey (4-1, 2-0) in a high-scoring affair. Three Ospreys reached double figures and combined for 54 of the team's 84 points.
Zavon Johnson went 5-8 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 24 points. Johnson went over 20 markers for the third time in the last five games.
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) made a strong return from a five-game injury absence with 19 points.
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) chipped in with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Barnes and Johnson each sank two early three-pointers to spark Stockton to a 14-8 lead. The Ospreys led 17-9 after another trey by Barnes and 20-12 following three free throws by Johnson, but the margin never reached double figures.
TCNJ chipped away and went ahead 40-37 with 5:30 left in the half. The teams continued exchanging points for the rest of the period, which ended in a 48-48 tie. Johnson carried Stockton with 18 first-half points, followed by Barnes with nine.
Stockton blinked in the first five minutes of the second half as TCNJ outscored them 16-7 for a 64-55 count. The Ospreys rallied with seven unanswered points to get within 64-62 but could not sustain the momentum. The Lions responded with an 11-2 run that made the score 75-64 with 10:30 to play.
After a Harmon three-pointer closed the gap to eight, the game began slipping away as Stockton could not match the scoring pace of TCNJ. The Ospreys trailed by double digits for the last 8:48 of the game and fell 95-84.
Stockton will face its second ranked opponent already this season when the Ospreys host #8 Ramapo in an NJAC matchup at The Sports Center on Saturday at 3 pm.
