Ewing, NJ – After starting the season with four straight wins, Stockton University (4-1, 1-1 NJAC) tasted defeat for the first time this year, falling to The College of New Jersey (4-1, 2-0 NJAC) 65-47 in an NJAC road game. The Ospreys struggled to score, shooting just 30 percent including 2-12 (16.7%) from three-point range.
Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) was the lone Stockton player in double figures with 16 points. The senior also tallied five blocks at the defensive end.
April Peterson (Lafayette/High Point) scored eight points.
Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with six points and three assists.
Peterson opened the game with a layup for Stockton's only lead of the night. The Ospreys managed just four points in the next eight-and-a-half minutes and fell behind by double digits. Trailing 19-9 after one quarter, Stockton closed the gap to six as Williams hit two layups in the first minute of the second period.
The offense stalled again, with Stockton sinking just two of 15 shots in the last 7:30 of the stanza. The slump left the Ospreys with a 33-19 deficit at the break. Stockton was 9-34 (26.5%) from the field and 0-5 from outside the arc in the half.
Although Stockton shot slightly better in the second half, 34.6 percent, the squad was unable to make a run. The Ospreys never got closer than 11 points and fell to the Lions 65-47.
Stockton returns home to host Ramapo in an NJAC game on Saturday at 1 pm.
