Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (6-4, 2-3 NJAC) pulled away in the last 15 minutes of the game and defeated William Paterson (3-6, 1-4) 85-77 at The Sports Center for its second straight NJAC win. Senior
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) reached the 1,000-point mark for his career and finished with a game-high 25 markers.
Harmon came into the game with 980 career points and hit the 1,000 plateau by swishing a three-pointer with 9:06 remaining in the game. He is the 30th men's basketball player to score his 1,000th point in a Stockton uniform. Harmon also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the contest.
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) scored 19 points and dished a game-high six assists. Barnes has netted at least 19 points in all five games that he has played this season.
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) chipped in with a season-high 13 points.
Stockton had its largest lead of the first half at 37-26 on a three-point play by Jerkins with 2:09 left in the period. William Paterson closed the half with an 8-3 run to trim the Osprey advantage to 40-34 at the break. Harmon led all players with 11 points followed by Barnes and Jerkins with nine apiece.
Stockton fell behind 43-41 with 15:20 on the clock before taking control of the game by outscoring the Pioneers 21-6 over the next six minutes. Harmon hit three three-pointers, the third of which gave him his scoring milestone and capped the run with the Ospreys on top 62-49 with 9:06 to go.
William Paterson later closed the gap to seven, but Barnes, Harmon and Jerkins answered with consecutive buckets to boost the margin back to 13 at 72-59 with 3:19 to go. Stockton then went 11-14 at the line the rest of way to maintain a comfortable cushion and win 85-77.
Domenic Mignone led four William Paterson players in double figures with 19 points off the bench. Richy Espinal netted 15 markers followed by Dapo Badmos with 11 and George Sapp with 10.
At halftime, Stockton University President Dr. Harvey Kesselman presented former men's coach Gerry Matthews with a commemorative photo of The Sports Center floor that bears his name as it was officially recognized as Gerry Matthews Court.
Stockton will take a break for final exams and then fly to Oregon for games at George Fox on December 17 and Linfield on December 19.
