Westminster, MD – Stockton University (1-0) opened up the 2017 season with a tight 11-10 victory over McDaniel College (0-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) led the way with four goals and two assists while
Brandon Nunez (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) scored three times.
Gallo opened the scoring and then Nunez, a transfer from Seton Hill, tallied his first goal at Stockton to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes.
Mike Caposella (Wayne/DePaul Catholic) later answered a McDaniel goal with his first of the game to make it 3-1, but the Green Terror struck twice in the last minute of the period for a 3-3 tie.
McDaniel sandwiched two goals around a Caposella marker and held a 5-4 edge over the Ospreys midway through the second quarter.

Tyler Bollard (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) and Gallo scored three straight markers to give the Ospreys a brief 7-5 margin. The Green Terror rallied with two goals in a row for a 7-7 tie at halftime.
The Ospreys outscored the home team 3-1 in the third period on two markers by Gallo and another by Nunez for a 10-8 lead after three quarters. McDaniel got within 10-9 early in the fourth quarter but Nunez tallied his third goal of the game to make it 11-9 with 2:43 remaining.
The game tightened in the final minute as the Green Terror closed the gap to one again at 11-10 with 51 seconds to go. A holding penalty at the 30-second mark made the Ospreys shorthanded, however they managed to protect the slim lead and win the season opener 11-10.
Caposella scored twice in support of Gallo with four goals and Nunez with three.
Lance Pecina (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) scooped a team-high five ground balls while Pecina and
Shane Park (Kinnelon/Kinnelon) registered two caused turnovers apiece. Goalkeeper
Eric Leonard (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) made a career-high 16 saves in net to gain the victory.
Chase Hartman scored three goals for McDaniel, with teammates Cooper Archambault and Jackson Reilly hitting the back of the net twice each on the day.
Stockton will begin a three-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon when they face FDU-Florham at 4 p.m.
