Galloway, NJ - Stockton University (13-9, 8-8 NJAC) connected on their final 11 foul shots in the last 5:49 to seal a 67-57 win over Rutgers-Newark (7-16, 6-10 NJAC) on Wednesday night. The victory extended Stockton's win streak to four straight games.
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) scored all 13 of his points in the second half to lead the Ospreys.
The Scarlet Raiders opened up an 18-10 with 13:20 left in the first half before Stockton responded with a 16-2 run to forge ahead 26-20.
Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) and
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) scored four points each during the spurt.
The visitors closed to 26-25 before Stockton ended the half scoring by seven of the last nine points to lead 33-27 at the break.
Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) and Hamilton tallied all of the Stockton points in the run.
Harmon scored Stockton's first 11 points coming out of the locker room in the second half on three three-pointers and a jumper to give the Ospreys a 44-32 advantage with 15:09 left in regulation.
The Scarlet Raiders battled back with a 16-4 run and knotted the game for the fifth and final time at 48-48 with 6:26 to play.
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) stopped the run with a traditional three-point play to give Stockton the lead for good at 51-48 with 5:49 showing on the clock.
Four free throws by Mark Thomas of Rutgers-Newark sandwich around a basket by
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) made it 55-52 with 4:00 left. Ford,
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland), Barnes and Harmon combined to sink 10 straight free throws and Johnson added a layup as the Ospreys closed out their fourth straight win, 67-57.
Barnes and Ford added 11 and 10 points respectively to aid Harmon for Stockton. Jerkins tied his career high with 11 rebounds to top all players and Ferebee grabbed nine boards to tie his career high as well. Stockton shot an outstanding 18-20 (90.0%) from the charity stripe on the night.
The Scarlet Raiders' Thomas led all scorers with a game-high 25 points, with teammate Landon Gaines chipping in with 15 markers.
Stockton next game will be Saturday afternoon when the Ospreys host Kean University at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
