Game 1 /
Game 2
Auburndale, FL – Stockton University (4-1) began its nine-game stint in Florida by splitting a doubleheader with Cairn University (5-1). The Ospreys won the first game 2-0 for their fourth straight win to open the season. Cairn ended the win streak by downing Stockton 10-1 in the second contest.
In the opener,
Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) tossed his second consecutive three-hit shutout and fanned 10 batters. Warburton improved to 3-0 and extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings since the start of the season.
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) went 2-3 with a two-run homer for two RBI.
Stephen Edelstein (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) and
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) contributed two hits apiece. Edelstein also tallied a double and a run scored.
The only scoring came in the bottom of the third. Edelstein singled with two outs and Pipher followed with a two-run homer to left center that was his second long ball of the season. Warburton retired the first 10 batters that he faced and allowed just one runner beyond second base as he continued his masterful early-season work on the mound in the 2-0 triumph.
Seven different Ospreys registered one hit apiece in the nightcap. Pipher drove in the lone run, which was scored by
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) in the top of the first.
Gustites led off the game with a single followed by hits from
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) and Edelstein to load the bases with nobody out. Pipher lofted a sacrifice fly to score Gustites for an early 1-0 lead but the Ospreys missed an opportunity for more and left the bases loaded.
Cairn tied it with a run in the bottom of the second and then scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to put Stockton behind 8-1. Single runs by the Highlanders in the fourth and fifth frames followed and the Ospreys suffered their first setback of the season, 10-1.
Stockton will be back on the field in Florida tomorrow for a single game against Wisconsin-Platteville at 2:30 p.m.
