Stockton Drops First Two Games of the Season

Game 1 / Game 2

Clermont, FL – Stockton (0-2) University opened the 2017 season on a tough note as the Ospreys lost their first two games of the Spring Break games by scores of 4-1 to Keene State (1-2) then dropped the nightcap to #21 Manhattanville (3-5) by a 14-2 margin. The Valiants, ranked nationally by the NFCA, were able to end the game on the mercy rule after six innings.

Game one saw the Ospreys fall behind early as Keene State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning. Stockton answered with their lone tally in the top of fourth frame, as Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp. /Monroe Twp.) doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) sacrifice fly to cut the margin to 2-1.

Keene State answered immediately plating a pair of runs to make it 4-1. The Ospreys had a threat going in the sixth inning, but a double play dampened any momentum and they fell by the 4-1 final. Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) tossed four innings, allowing just two earned runs but suffered the loss. In her Osprey debut, Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) led the offense with two hits for Stockton.

Game two was all Manhattanville as they rapped out 16 hits in scoring 14 times against three Osprey pitchers. Stockton plated two early runs to take a brief 2-1 lead on RBI by Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) and Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury). The Valiants scored twice in their half of the second inning to re-take the lead they would not relinquish at 3-2.

The turning point in the contest happened in the bottom of the second inning as Schieda singled but was forced at second, replaced by Massa. Daniela Marinaro (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) and Morgan DiVello (Atco/Hammonton) followed with safeties loading the bases with one away.

But a fly out and fielder's choice ended the rally. From there it was all Valiants, as they scored four times in the third inning, before ending the game after six innings, with seven more markers in the last two frames for the 14-2 final.

Hannah Bibeault started in the circle, taking the loss and was replaced by Torp. Both hurlers threw 2.2 innings each, before giving way to Rosie LaGrotta (Franklinville/Paul VI), making her Stockton debut. LaGrotta tossed 2/3 of an inning and recorded her first career strikeout.

The Ospreys tough Florida schedule continues tomorrow when they will face nationally ranked #7 Messiah at 10:30am, then will take on NYU at 3:30 pm.
