Stockton Sweeps Two Games in Florida

Game 1 / Game 2

Leesburg, FL – Stockton University (2-2) rebounded in a big way on Monday, as the Ospreys swept both games evening their record at 2-2. Stockton downed #7 Messiah (6-2) 4-3 in eight innings, before coming from behind to beat NYU (2-2) 6-4 in the second contest of the day. Freshman Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) rapped her first six career hits in eight at bats to lead the offense for the day.

In game one, against the nationally ranked Falcons, Stockton fell behind on an unearned run in the fourth inning but quickly took their first lead of the game. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) and Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) reached base and were driven home on sacrifice flies by Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) and Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury), to lead 2-1 after six frames.

Two errors by Stockton allowed Messiah to knot the game at 2-2 the next inning, but the Ospreys could not win the game in regulation, stranding two runners in their half of the seventh. With the international tie-breaker in effect, the Falcons pushed across the go-ahead run to give them a 3-2 margin, setting up the Ospreys heroics in the bottom of the final inning.

Thomas was placed on second, then Shaw drew a walk. Lugo advanced the runners and Arentowicz picked up an infield single, loading the bases with one away. Cosenzo rapped an infield single scoring Thomas. With two away, Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) smacked a ball through the right side, scoring Shaw with the game winner at 4-3 in eight innings.

Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) earned her first win of the year, tossing eight innings in the complete game victory. She did not allow an earned run and induced 13 ground balls.

The second game saw Stockton fall behind again, this time 2-0, after NYU plated single markers in the first two innings. The Ospreys responded with two scores of their own to knot the game after three innings.  An RBI by Massa and a Violets miscue tied the game at 2-2. An NYU two-run homer gave the home team the lead at 4-2 after four frames before the Ospreys pulled away.

In the top of the fifth, Stockton sent eight batters to the dish, scoring four runs. RBI by Cosenzo, pinch hitter Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport, NJ / Rancocas Valley), plus two costly NYU errors, gave Stockton a 6-4 margin they would not relinquish.

Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) started in the circle, throwing five solid innings, before giving way to Bibeault. The junior nailed down the win, tossing two perfect innings and picking up the save to go with her win earlier in the day.

The Ospreys continue their Florida trip with two more games tomorrow. They will face RPI at 6 pm, followed by a tilt against Marywood at 8:30 pm
