Winter Haven, FL – Stockton University (5-2) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and edged Colby-Sawyer (NH) 5-4.
Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) went 3-4 with a double and two runs for the Ospreys.
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) contributed two hits and an RBI while
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) extended his hitting streak to seven with a double and also scored once.
Two newcomers pitched for the Ospreys in the victory. Freshman
Nick Maglione (Hamilton/Steinert) scattered 10 hits in six innings to earn his first career win. Junior
Alex Humes (Moorestown/Moorestown) came out of the bullpen and hurled three scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two to register a save.
Colby-Sawyer took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Stockton got on the board in the top of the third as Morello doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central). The Chargers came right back with a run in the bottom half to make it a 3-1 game.
Stockton got within 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Piper doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Swentkowski two batters later. The Ospreys took the lead in the fifth frame. Morello and
Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) each singled with nobody out. Both later scored unearned runs to put the Ospreys on top 4-3.
Colby-Sawyer tied the game 4-4 with a single run in the bottom of the sixth but Stockton answered quickly in the top of the seventh. Gustites singled with two outs and
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) followed with a clutch triple that scored Gustites with the go-ahead run at 5-4.
Humes came to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and preserved the lead for the last three innings. He allowed the tying run to reach second base in the seventh and ninth frames but closed the door on the Chargers each time and Stockton prevailed 5-4.
Stockton will take on Franklin & Marshall in Auburndale tomorrow at 4 p.m.
