Stockton Falls to F&M 29-15 in Slugfest

Auburndale, FL – Stockton University (5-3) was outscored 29-15 by Franklin & Marshall (6-4) in an offensive slugfest that took 4:26 to play. Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) went 3-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
 
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) and Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) registered two hits, two runs and two RBI apiece. Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) extended his season-opening hitting streak to eight games with his team-leading third home run of the season. Swentkowski pushed his hitting streak to six as well.
 
Franklin & Marshall took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Ospreys went in front 4-3 with four runs in the second frame. Swentkowski and Gonella each stroked RBI singles in the inning.
 
Stockton then exploded for eight runs in the third inning for a 12-3 advantage. Gustites ripped an RBI double, Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) knocked a two-run double and Pipher capped the inning with a three-run homer.
 
The Diplomats got two runs in the fourth to make it 12-5 and then went back in front with an eight-spot of their own in the sixth for a 13-12 count. Disaster struck for Stockton in the top of the seventh as F&M plated 11 runs on seven hits and three errors by the Ospreys to up the score to 24-12.
 
Facing an early ending due to the run rule, Stockton came up with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to stay alive at 24-15. Gustites and Stephen Edelstein (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) rapped RBI singles and Swentkowski earned an RBI with a bases-loaded walk. Franklin & Marshall later tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth for the 29-15 final score.
 
The Ospreys will have a day off tomorrow and then take on a fellow New Jersey team, FDU-Florham, on Thursday at 10 a.m.
