Winter Haven, FL – Stockton University (5-4) suffered a 13-9 setback to fellow New Jersey team FDU-Florham (4-3) in the Sunshine State.
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) extended his hitting streak to seven in impressive fashion as he went 5-5 with four RBI, a double and a run.
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) and
Stephen Edelstein (Staten Island, NY/Tottenham) contributed two hits and a run scored apiece to the offense.
Stockton broke out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) boosted his hitting streak to nine with an RBI triple and Swentkowski singled in two runs.
FDU-Florham pulled ahead with a five-spot in the second inning but Stockton drew into a 5-5 tie with two runs in the third frame. Swentkowski rapped another RBI single and
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) scored Pipher with a sacrifice fly.
The Devils went back on top 11-5 with two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth. Stockton closed the gap to 11-8 with three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth.
David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) delivered an RBI single in the inning.
FDU-Florham scored twice more in the sixth frame for a 13-8 count before freshman pitcher
Tyler Black (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) came out of the bullpen and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in his first college appearance. Swentkowski doubled in a run in the eighth stanza with his fifth hit of the game but Stockton got no closer and fell 13-9.
Stockton will face St. Norbert (WI) in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
