Stockton Splits Home Opener vs. Alvernia

Game 1 / Game 2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-5) played their first two home games and split a doubleheader against Alvernia (7-3) on Tuesday afternoon. The Ospreys dropped game one 2-1 before capturing the nightcap 5-1 for the split. Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) had three hits and drove in three RBI to lead the Ospreys on the day.

Stockton mustered just four hits during their opener in the 2-1 defeat. After the Crusaders plated single runs in the first two innings for a 2-0 lead, the Ospreys scored one in the third frame to cut the margin to 2-1. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) singled, stole second and scored on a bunt single by Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) two batters later.

Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) came out of the bullpen to pitch three scoreless innings, but Alvernia allowed just two more Stockton players to reach base the rest of the game and the Ospreys fell 2-1.

Stockton jumped out early in game two, scoring twice using the long ball in the opening frame. Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) singled and stole second before scoring on Cosenzo's third home run of the season for a quick 2-0 lead.

Stockton plated three more markers on four hits in the third inning. Thomas reached on an error and scored on a Shaw double. Cosenzo doubled to plate Shaw, then scored on a Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) single, stretching the margin to 5-0 after three innings. Freshman Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) picked up her first career hit in the fourth inning of the contest.

Torp started and gave up just five hits and one unearned run in her five innings of work. Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) finished up the last two innings but not without some drama. The junior pitched out of bases loaded, one-out jams in both of the last two innings to nail down the 5-1 victory, giving Torp her third win of the season.

Stockton will be off until Saturday when they will face Stevens at home in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
