Game 1 /
Game 2
Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-6) split a home doubleheader with visiting SUNY Cortland (7-5), dropping the first game 7-4 but winning the second game 4-1. The nightcap was called after 4 ½ innings due to darkness.
In the opener,
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) went 2-3 with a triple and a run while
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) added two hits and a run. Starter
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) was solid on the mound, allowing two earned runs plus two unearned in 5.2 inning pitched. Torp was not involved in the decision though.
Cortland took advantage of a Stockton error with two outs to score two unearned runs in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. The Red Dragons increased the margin to 3-0 with a run in the fourth. Stockton got one back in the bottom of the fourth as Schieda singled and later scored on a groundout. The Ospreys plated two unearned runs of their own in the fifth frame to tie the game 3-3.
Cortland went back on top 4-3 in the sixth inning but the Ospreys tied it again at 4-4 in the bottom half as Lugo tripled and scored on an RBI single by
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park). Cortland pulled ahead again with three runs in the top of the seventh and dealt Stockton the 7-4 defeat.
Torp was masterful in the nightcap, yielding just one run on two hits in five innings of work for the win. Seven Ospreys rapped one hit apiece, led by Cosenzo with a home run and Schieda with a double.
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) extended her hitting streak to 14 (every game this season) as well.
Cosenzo got Stockton off to a great start with her fourth homer of the season in the bottom of the first, a solo blast to right center. After Cortland tied it 1-1 in the top of the second, Shaw gave the Ospreys the lead for good at 2-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
In the third inning, Schieda ripped an RBI double off the top of the fence, just inches from a home run. Schieda then scored on a pinch-hit RBI single by
Jessica McDonaugh (Brick/Brick Twp.) to increase the led to 4-1. Torp hurled two perfect innings in the fourth and fifth, and the game was called due to darkness as the Ospreys earned the split.
Stockton will be right back on the field tomorrow for a home doubleheader against Stevens at 1 p.m.
