Stockton Sweeps Stevens 5-3 & 1-0

Game 1 / Game 2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-6) swept a doubleheader from Stevens (10-6) by scores of 5-3 and 1-0 to wrap up a six-game homestand. Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) pitched eight scoreless innings in the twinbill, earning a save in the opener and the win in the nightcap.

Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) rapped two of Stockton's nine hits in the first game, including a double. Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings pitched for the win and Torp tossed a perfect seventh inning for a save.

Stevens got on the board with a run in the top of second but Stockton came back with two runs in the bottom half for a 2-1 lead. Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single to score Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) who had walked and Morgan DiVello (Atco/Hammonton) who had singled.

The Ospreys took advantage of two errors by the Ducks to score three unearned runs in the fourth frame. Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) laid down a bunt for an RBI single that was Stockton's only hit of the inning as Stockton increased its advantage to 5-1.

Stevens closed the gap with two runs on three hits in the sixth but Bibeault induced a flyout to end the inning with two runners on base. Torp came out of the bullpen in the seventh stanza and retired three Stevens batters in order to close the 5-3 triumph.

Torp hurled a gem in the nightcap with a three-hit shutout and three strikeouts. The sophomore allowed just one runner beyond first base and the Ospreys recorded two double plays in the game. Offensively, six Stockton players knocked one hit apiece.

Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) led off the bottom of the first with a single that extended her hitting streak to 16 (every game this season). Shaw then stole second, moved to third on a bunt single by Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) and scored the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Massa.

Torp allowed just one leadoff batter to reach base, in the fourth, but came back with a flyout and double play to end the inning. Stevens had runners on first and third with one out in the sixth when Torp speared a line drive and fired to first for an inning-ending double play. She capped the shutout with three groundouts in the seventh as the Ospreys completed the sweep with the 1-0 victory.

Stockton plays the first of two straight doubleheaders on the road on Tuesday when the Ospreys visit Neumann. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
