Game 1 /
Game 2
Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-7) swept two games against Swarthmore College (6-12) by scores of 4-1 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) and
Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) tossed complete games, with Hughes picking up his first career victory. The two wins also gave head coach
Scott Baker his 200th career overall win.
Swarthmore opened the scoring with a single tally in the top of the first for a brief 1-0 lead, until Stockton plated three runs in their half of the third inning.
Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) walked and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and ground out.
Four straight singles by
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial),
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp. /EHT),
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) and
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) scored three runs to give Stockton a 3-1 lead after three frames.
DiPaola hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 4-1 lead, before the Garnet picked a run to make it 4-2 in the seventh. Warburton then closed the door with a pop-up and strikeout to seal his fourth win of the season and the 4-2 victory.
The nightcap saw the Garnet start the scoring against Hughes with a pair of unearned markers in the top of the third. Stockton answered in their half of the fourth inning, plating three runs on four hits. Once again the middle of the order helped the cause.
Singles by Hobbs and Swentkowski and a double by Pipher scored one run. LaPorta and
Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) then smacked RBI groudouts for a 3-2 Osprey advantage after three innings. It was all Hughes after that as the sophomore allowed just two hits the rest of the way for his first career complete game and victory.
Hughes struck out four Garnet hitters, as did Warburton in game one. The pair of Stockton hurlers gave up just seven Swarthmore hits on the day in the two complete game victories.
Stockton will continue their five game home stand with a contest against Neumann University on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm in Galloway.
