Stockton Nips St. Joseph’s-LI 10-9 in Overtime

Patchogue, NY – Stockton University (5-1) edged St. Joseph's-Long Island (1-6) 10-9 on a goal by freshman Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) in sudden-death overtime. The Ospreys erased an early three-goal deficit and went on to post their fifth consecutive win.
 
Yannacone led Stockton with four goals followed by fellow rookie Kristen Russo (Wayne/Wayne Hills) with two goals and an assist. The Ospreys outshot St. Joseph's-LI 40-19 in the game but Golden Eagles' goalie Lindsay Ramos made 22 saves to keep it close.
 
Stockton scored just once in the opening 23 minutes, Yannacone's first tally of the game, and fell behind 4-1. Alexa Rubino (Voorhees/Eastern) made it 4-2 with 2:27 left in the first half and Yannacone struck just 14 seconds later to get the Ospreys within one. Yannacone found the net again with 12 seconds left in the half for a 4-4 tie.
 
The Golden Eagles scored the first two goals of the second half to go up 6-4 but Mary Schmid (Lumberton/Holy Cross) and Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) answered for Stockton to create a 6-6 tie. The teams alternated the next four goals, with St. Joseph's-LI pulling ahead 7-6 before Russo tied it 7-7 and 8-7 before Russo knotted the game at 8-8 with only 1:14 remaining.
 
Kim Raichelson (Brick/Brick Memorial) gave Stockton its first lead of the day with a goal assisted by Yannacone at the 52-second mark. With time winding down, the Golden Eagles tied the game in dramatic fashion by scoring in the final seconds to force overtime at 9-9.
 
St. Joseph's took possession to start the OT but Schmid forced a turnover and the Ospreys went on the attack. Yannacone potted her fourth goal of the game with an assist by Rubino to lift Stockton to the 10-9 overtime triumph.
 
Stockton goalkeeper Maura Twiggs (Ocean City/Ocean City) notched the win with five saves. Kelsey Perst (Blairstown/North Warren) led all players with four caused turnovers while Schmid totaled game highs of seven ground balls and four draw controls plus three caused turnovers.
 
Stockton will have a long layoff before its next game, which is at Elizabethtown on April 5 at 4 p.m.
