Stockton Sweeps Centenary 3-0 and 8-1

Game 1 / Game 2

Flemington, NJ – Stockton University (3-0) got back on the field for its first games in nine days and swept a doubleheader from Centenary (0-2) 3-0 and 8-1 at the Diamond Nation complex. Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 3-7 with five RBI on the day.

Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) added three hits and four RBI while Stephen Edelstein (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) contributed three hits and four runs in the twinbill.

Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) improved to 2-0 on the season with his first career shutout in the opener. Warburton allowed just three hits and fanned seven in the seven-inning contest. Pipher went 2-3 with a home run and all three RBI for the Ospreys. Edelstein rapped two hits and scored twice.

The game was scoreless into the fourth inning, which Edelstein led off with a double. Pipher followed with an RBI triple to get the Ospreys on the board with a 1-0 lead.

Stockton added two insurance runs in the sixth frame. Edelstein reached on an error to start the inning. Pipher followed with a two-run homer to left field that made it 3-0. Warburton later capped the shutout by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

LaPorta led the way in the nightcap, going 2-5 with a double, triple, five RBI and a run. Pipher was 1-3 with an RBI and two runs. Starter Brandon Perna (Cherry Hill/CH West) allowed just one run on five hits and struck out eight in six innings pitched for the win. Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to complete the sweep.

Stockton wasted little time grabbing the lead as Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) was hit by a pitch to start the game and later scored on a throwing error. The 1-0 edge lasted until the sixth inning when the Ospreys broke out with four runs on three hits.

With the bases loaded, LaPorta ripped a double that scored all three runners. JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) followed with an RBI single to plate LaPorta for a 5-0 lead. Centenary got on the board for the first time all day with a solo homer leading off the bottom of the sixth.

Stockton tacked on three more runs in the seventh frame. Gustites walked and Edelstein singled to set the table. Pipher followed with a RBI single to score Gustites. LaPorta came up next and blasted a triple to left center that scored Edelstein and Pipher with the final runs in the 8-1 victory.

Stockton is off until its trip to Florida during spring break. The Ospreys will begin their stay in the Sunshine State with a doubleheader against Cairn University on March 11 at 2:45 p.m.
