Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-1) reeled off five straight goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half and defeated Widener University (1-2) 8-3 for its second straight win. Freshman
Kristen Russo (Wayne/Wayne Hills) scored her first three college goals to lead the Ospreys to victory.
Stockton spotted Widener two goals in the first eight minutes before settling in.
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) scored her first marker of the season just past the midway point of the first half.
Alexa Rubino (Voorhees/Eastern) potted a counter just under four minutes later for a 2-2 tie.
Just 2:45 after that, Russo tallied her first of the game to give the Ospreys the lead for good at 3-2. Goals by
Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) and
Mary Schmid (Lumberton/Holy Cross) followed as Stockton extended the lead to 5-2. Kelly Lynch got one back for Widener with 1:11 on the first-half clock and the Ospreys led 5-3 at the break.
Stockton shut out the Pride in the second half. Russo found the net for the second time with only 1:16 gone in the stanza for a 6-3 count and then neither team scored for nearly 18 minutes. Russo completed the hat trick with 10:50 remaining and
Kelsey Perst (Blairstown/North Warren) tacked on her first goal of the season late in the game to seal the 8-3 Stockton triumph.
In addition to her three goals, Russo also snagged a game-high four draw controls while Schmid finished with a goal and an assist.
Tamara Torales (Basking Ridge/Ridge) paced the defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Goalkeeper
Maura Twiggs (Ocean City/Ocean City) earned the win with eight saves.
Stockton's game at St. Joseph's-LI is postponed for Saturday, which makes the Ospreys' next match a home affair against Neumann on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
