Kings Point, NY – Stockton University (13-2, 6-1 Skyline) moved into sole possession of second place in the Skyline Conference with a key 14-12 win over Merchant Marine (7-3, 5-2). The Ospreys rallied from a three-goal deficit by outscoring the Mariners 8-3 in the fourth quarter for their fourth straight win.
Colin Shea (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) led Stockton with four goals and an assist followed by
Brandon Nunez (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) with three goals and
Zack Aho (Shamong/Seneca) with two.
Aho opened the scoring 1:18 into the game but USMMA outscored Stockton 4-1 the rest of the period with Nunez getting the lone tally for the Ospreys. Markers by Aho and Nunez 43 seconds apart pulled Stockton into a 4-4 tie early in the second quarter.
Joey Tiernan (Voorhees/Eastern) scored 24 seconds after a Mariners tally for a 5-5 deadlock but the home team potted two goals for a 7-5 count at halftime.
Nunez sandwiched hit third of the game around two Merchant Marine tallies and Stockton trailed 9-6 entering the fourth quarter.
Mike Caposella (Wayne/DePaul Catholic) got the rally started with his 99th career goal and
Chris Kaczmarski (Somers Point/Mainland) followed 30 seconds later with an assist by Shea to make it 9-8.
The Mariners boosted the margin back to two with 8:57 remaining, but Shea and the Ospreys took over from there. Shea's first of the game ignited a three-goal run in which
Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) and
Jon Liguori (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) hit the net 27 seconds apart.
After USMMA tied the game for fifth and final time at 11-11, Shea scored three straight goals to put Stockton ahead 14-11. The Mariners got within 14-12 with 37 seconds remaining but
Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) made a save on one shot and another was blocked as the Ospreys closed out their fourth straight win.
Ruiz played well in goal again, finishing with 15 saves.
Tyler Bollard (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) won 18 of 29 faceoffs and snagged eight ground balls. Tucker Dodson paced the host Mariners with three goals and two assists with Nick Roros also scored three goals.
Stockton will have a week off before traveling to Kean University for a Skyline game next Wednesday, April 19 at 7 p.m.
