Stockton Splits Two with Montclair State 6-0, 4-2

Game 1 / Game 2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (15-13, 5-5 NJAC) split a conference doubleheader against Montclair State (15-13, 4-6 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawks took game one by a 6-0 score, with the Ospreys returning the favor and winning 4-2 in the nightcap. Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) led the home team with three hits and two runs scored on the day.

Game one was all Sam Keating for the Red Hawks as she induced 16 groundouts, allowing just three hits against Stockton. Montclair plated two runs in the first inning and a single tally on a Lia Stamile homer in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Stockton had their lone opportunity in their half of the third inning when they loaded the bases with two away but could not push across a marker. The visitors scored a single run in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh for the 6-0 final.

Stockton rallied late to take game two and gain a split of the twinbill. The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before Stockton immediately responded. Shaw doubled and advanced to third on an Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) single. Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) grounded out to plate Shaw to knot the game at 1-1 after three frames.

Montclair State scored a single run in the next inning on an Elena Radesich homer before the Ospreys took over the game in the bottom of the sixth . Three runs on two hits and two costly Red Hawk miscues salted the game away for the Ospreys. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) singled, stole second and scored on an Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) single to tie the game at 2-2.

After a sacrifice bunt, Shaw reached on an error and promptly stole second to put runners at second and third. Massa squeezed home Lobell for a 3-2 margin and Shaw then scored on a failed pickoff at third for the fourth run. Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) worked a perfect final inning for the complete game and her eighth win of the season in the 4-2 victory for Stockton.

Stockton will take on The College of New Jersey on Tuesday at home for their next outing. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 pm.
