Stockton Gets Win and Tie vs. TCNJ

Game 1 / Game 2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (16-13-1, 6-5-1 NJAC) came away with a win and a tie in two eight-inning games against The College of New Jersey (11-14-1, 3-8-1). The Ospreys prevailed 2-1 in the opener. Stockton then scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to rally from a 5-2 deficit and salvage a 5-5 tie before the nightcap was called due to darkness.

Stockton pitchers Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) and Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) combined to outduel TCNJ hurler Sam Platt in the opener. Torp, the starter, tossed five shutout innings (four hits) before Bibeaut earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief.

The Ospreys took the early lead as Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on a two-out hit by Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury), who rapped two safeties in each game.

The one run edge lasted until the sixth inning when TCNJ tied it 1-1 on an RBI double by Gaby Bennett. Stockton notched the walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth as a ball off the bat of Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) was misplayed for an error that scored Shaw, who started inning on second due to tiebreaker rules, for the 2-1 triumph.

In game two, Cosenzo went 3-4 with a double and two RBI while Arentowicz was 2-5 with an RBI. Torp had another solid outing, allowing just one run on five hits in four innings before yielding to Bibeault out of the bullpen.

Stockton again took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, this time on four walks, three of which loaded the bases before Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) drew the fourth for an RBI. TCNJ tied the game in the top of the fourth as Jess Santelli scored on a first-and-third double steal play. The Ospreys went ahead 2-1 on an RBI double by Cosenzo that plated Shaw in the bottom of the fourth.

The Lions pulled into a 2-2 tie with an unearned run in the fifth inning and the teams went scoreless for the rest of regulation. TCNJ then took a lead for the first time all day with three runs on three hits in the top of the eighth, putting the Ospreys in a 5-2 hole.

Stockton's comeback started with an RBI groundout by Morgan DiVello (Atco/Hammonton) that made it 5-3. With two outs, Shaw drew a walk and Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) followed with a single that put the tying run aboard. Cosenzo and Arentowicz then stroked consecutive RBI singles that tied the game 5-5 and put the winning run on third.

The rally ended on an inning-ending strikeout and the game was called due to darkness with the teams deadlocked at 5-5, resulting in a rare tie.

Stockton will be back in action on Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader at Neumann at 3 p.m.
