West Chester, PA – Stockton University (17-14-1) split a non-conference doubleheader at Neumann (18-10) today. The Ospreys were edged 3-2 in the opener but earned a split by outslugging the Knights 13-9 in the nightcap.
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) totaled a team-high four hits on the day.
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) and
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) blasted three-run homers one inning apart in the second game.
Massa went 2-3 with an RBI and
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) was 2-4 with two runs in game one. Starter
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) pitched well, allowing just one run on seven hits in five innings. Torp stood to get the win on the mound, but the Ospreys couldn't hold the lead.
Shaw led off the game with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a bunt single by Massa for a quick 1-0 lead. Shaw later led off the fifth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Massa and scored on an RBI single by Cosenzo to double the lead to 2-0.
Neumann got on the board with a single tally in the bottom of the fifth to make it 2-1 but Stockton was three outs away from a win entering the bottom of the seventh. The Knights used a single and two walks to set up a walk-off single by Julia Cox that plated the tying and winning runs as they edged the Ospreys 3-2.
Massa was 2-4 with two runs while
Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley),
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) and
Morgan DiVello (Atco/Hammonton) rapped two hits apiece as well.
Neumann started fast, with three runs in the bottom of the first. Stockton quickly tied it 3-3 with three runs in the top of the second.
Casey Schieda ripped an RBI triple and then scored on an error during the next play. DiVello drove in the tying run with a bunt single.
Neumann came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to double Stockton 6-3 and the Knights stayed in front until the fifth frame when Arentowicz hit a three-run blast, her fifth homer of the season, to launch the Ospreys ahead 7-6.
Stockton broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning. RBI singles by Shaw and DiVello were followed by a three-run homer for the second straight inning. This one came off the bat of Cosenzo for her seventh homer of the year, which is one off the school record. The long ball made it 13-6 and Stockton won 13-9.
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) came out of the bullpen early and limited the Knights to three runs on six hits with six strikeouts in five innings for the win.
Stockton will host NJAC leader Ramapo in a twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
