Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-2, 2-1 NJAC) opened up a three-goal lead late in the game and held on for a 10-9 victory over Kean University (9-4, 2-1).
Alexa Rubino (Voorhees/Eastern) led the Ospreys with three goals and an assist.
Mary Schmid (Lumberton/Holy Cross) scored three goals followed by
Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) with two goals. The close game featured five ties and a margin of two goals or less for all but 27 seconds of the 60-minute contest.
Kean's Brittany Ballack opened the scoring with the first of her game-high four goals but Rubino and Schmid answered to put Stockton on top 2-1. After Ballack tied the game 2-2, tallies by
Kristen Russo (Wayne/Wayne Hills) and Yannacone gave the Ospreys a 4-2 advantage.
Two straight goals 50 seconds apart by Taylor Hynes tied it at 4-4.
Kim Raichelson (Brick/Brick Memorial) put Stockton in front 5-4 but Ballack's third marker of the half came with 28 seconds left and resulted in a 5-5 tie at the break.
One minute into the second half, Emily Stasuk gave the Cougars their second and final lead at 6-5. Stockton responded by pumping in three goals in 2:23 to go ahead 8-6. Schmid, Rubino and Yannacone hit the net during the spurt. After Stasuk got Kean within 8-7, Rubino scored at the 8:46 mark followed by Schmid for a 10-7 advantage with 4:22 to play.
The Cougars came right back with goals by Stasuk and Ballack just 31 seconds apart to make it 10-9 with 3:24 to go. Stockton managed to protect the slim lead the rest of the way without allowing a shot as they held on for the one-goal triumph.

Maura Twiggs (Ocean City/Ocean City) finished with eight saves, equaling her second-highest total of the season.
Kelsey Perst (Blairstown/North Warren) contributed five ground balls and four caused turnovers while
Amanda Scarpa (Manalapan/Freehold Twp.) tallied three draw controls, one caused turnover and one ground ball.
In addition to Ballack's four goals, Stasuk registered three goals and a game-high seven draw controls for Kean. Goalie Nikki Apostolopoulos made six saves for the Cougars.
Stockton's next game will be an NJAC matchup at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
