Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-3, 3-2 NJAC) played its final home game of the regular season and suffered an 11-6 defeat to conference foe Montclair State (10-4, 3-1).
Mary Schmid (Lumberton/Holy Cross) paced the Ospreys with two goals and one assist.
Alexa Rubino (Voorhees/Eastern) scored two goals followed by
Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) and
Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) with a goal and an assist apiece to round out the Stockton scorers.
Rubino gave the Ospreys their only lead of the game by scoring first, just over four minutes into the match. Francesa Verrone answered with two straight tallies but Schmid pulled Stockton into a 2-2 tie near the midpoint of the first half.
Verrone gave the Red Hawks the lead for good with 8:58 remaining in the first half, igniting a run of four straight MSU goals in 3:24. After the outburst, Stockton faced a 6-2 deficit that lasted through halftime. The Ospreys were outshot 18-8 in the half but goalkeeper
Maura Twiggs (Ocean City/Ocean City) kept her team in it with six saves.
Montclair State scored the first two goals of the second half to extend to 8-2 before Stockton staged a comeback try. Rubino, Butrico and Schmid potted counters in a span of 4:37 to close the gap to 8-5 with 14:17 remaining. The rally stalled as the Red Hawks shut down the Osprey attack for the rest of the game.
After Montclair State tacked on three more goals, Yannacone found the net with seven-tenths of a second left for the last tally in the 11-6 setback for Stockton.
Twiggs finished with 10 saves, the second-highest total of her career, as the Ospreys were outshot 31-19.
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) contributed three draw controls and two caused turnovers for Stockton.
Verrone netted a game-high four goals for MSU, followed by Kyle Graver with three. Red Hawks' goalie Amanda Maguire earned the win with seven saves.
Stockton will play its last two regular season games on the road, starting with an NJAC contest at The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. The Lions are ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
