Stockton Tops Rutgers-Newark 6-1

Newark, NJ – Stockton University (14-17, 6-9 NJAC) scored first and kept the lead for the rest of the game as the Ospreys topped Rutgers-Newark (22-11-1, 8-7) 6-1 at Riverfront Stadium. Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) rapped four of Stockton's 10 hits and scored once.
 
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 2-4 with a double and Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
 
Stockton broke a scoreless tie with three unearned runs on two hits and three errors in the fourth inning. Hobbs singled and later scored the first run on a fielder's choice. Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) followed with a two-run single that increased the lead to 3-0.
 
Rutgers-Newark got on the board with an RBI double by Ross Halkias in the bottom of the sixth but the Ospreys came right back with two runs in the top of the seventh. Pipher led off with a solo homer to left field for the first score.
 
Two batters later, Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) walked. Morello moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a single by Hobbs before scoring on an RBI groundout by Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) to make it 5-1.
 
In the eighth inning, Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) singled and then stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Pipher to complete the scoring in the 6-1 Stockton triumph.
 
Starter Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) evened his record at 3-3 with the win. Hughes struck out a career-high 11, walked eight and allowed just three hits and one run in eight innings pitched. Freshman Tyler Apt (Williamstown/Williamstown) worked a scoreless ninth frame and struck out one.
 
The teams will square off again tomorrow when Stockton hosts Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 p.m.
