Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (15-17, 7-9 NJAC) scored all of their runs in the final three innings, to down Rutgers-Newark (22-12, 8-8 NJAC) 9-2 on Friday afternoon. The Ospreys swept the home-and-home series with the Scarlet Raiders after winning 6-1 yesterday at Newark.
Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) rapped two hits to top the squad.
The visitors broke the scoreless affair with a single run in the top of the fourth inning against Osprey hurler
Kevin Buell (Ocean Twp. /Ocean Twp.). A single, stolen base, ground out and wild pitch plated the first run of the day.
Stockton put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four times on just one hit and four errors. DeSenzo walked,
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp. /EHT) reached on an error, then
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) was hit by a pitch.
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) reached safely on a fielder's choice and reached second on a throwing error.
The same play saw another error that cleared the bases for a 3-1 Osprey lead. LaPorta swiped third and tallied the fourth run on a throwing error for the 4-1 margin. Three more runs in the seventh inning and two more the following frame gave Stockton a commanding 9-1 advantage. The Scarlet Raiders plated a single run in the top of the ninth to set the final score at 9-2.
Buell picked up his first win of the season, tossing 6.2 innings allowing three hits, one run and striking out two batters.
Nick Maglione (Moorestown/Moorestown) and
Ryan Moore (Waldwick/Waldwick) finished up the final 2.1 innings giving up just a single run.
Stockton will finish up regular season tomorrow when they will travel to Ramapo College for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:30 am.
