Newark, NJ – Stockton University (20-17-1, 9-8-1) completed its 18-game NJAC slate with a sweep of Rutgers-Newark (15-23, 3-15) by scores of 5-1 and 3-0. With the wins, the Ospreys nailed down the No. 5 seed for the upcoming NJAC tournament.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) registered two hits in each game and became Stockton's career stolen base leader with 65 steals.
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) also reached a milestone with her 100th career hit.
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) went 2-3 with a triple and a run in the opener. Thomas finished with two hits, her record-tying 64th career steal and an RBI.
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) also added two hits in the 5-1 triumph.
Stockton scored all five of its runs on three hits and two errors in the fourth inning. Arentowicz led off with a walk and later scored on an error.
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) and
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) each earned an RBI on a fielder's choice and groundout respectively. Thomas dropped a bunt single that led to one RBI and another run that scored on the throw.
Stockton pitcher
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) took a shutout into the seventh inning before two errors by the Ospreys allowed Rutgers-Newark to plate one run. Bibeault finished with a two-hitter and two strikeouts for her 10th win of the season.
Lugo was 2-3 with her second triple of the day and two RBI in the nightcap. Arentowicz rapped two hits, reaching the 100-mark on a single in the first inning. Thomas also contributed two hits and broke the school record of 64 career stolen bases by Samantha Horner (2006-09) with her 65th in the seventh inning.
The game was scoreless into the sixth frame. Lugo ripped a triple that scored the first two runs, and she scored the third on a wild pitch.
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) tossed a five-hitter with two strikeouts for her third shutout of the season in the 3-0 victory.
Stockton will conclude the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at Arcadia tomorrow at 11 a.m.
