Stockton Holds On to Down Rowan 6-5

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-9, 2-1 NJAC) used a six-run third inning and held on for a slim 6-5 win over Rowan University (16-8, 1-2 NJAC) on a chilly Friday afternoon. James Wines (Hazlet/Raritan) and Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) rapped two hits each to lead the offense.

The Profs jumped out with three runs in the top of the second inning against Osprey hurler Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp,). Rowan used four hits and a sacrifice bunt to take a 3-0 lead. Stockton answered the next inning, sending 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the third frame.

The Ospreys loaded the bases with no one out, then used RBI by Wines and JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) plus a two-RBI double by Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) and a single by David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) that plated two more markers to give Stockton six runs and a 6-3 advantage.

Rowan scored twice more in their half of the fifth to close the gap to 6-5 but that would be all the scoring the rest of the game. Freshman Tyler Apt (Williamstown/Williamstown) came on in relief of Hughes and shut the door.

Apt tossed four perfect innings, allowing just two hits in gaining his first career save. Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) helped out by making two diving catches in left field to help preserve the victory.

Hughes picked up his second victory of the year with five innings of work on the hill. Apt earned his first career save. Stockton was outhit 13-7 but came away with the win.

Stockton will travel to Union, NJ tomorrow to play a doubleheader against Kean University. First pitch is set for 11:30 am.
