Union, NJ – Stockton University (11-10, 3-2 NJAC) split an NJAC doubleheader with Kean University (15-10, 2-3), winning the first game 11-2 but dropping the second 13-8. The Cougars are ranked #27 in the American Baseball Coaches Association national poll.
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) rapped a team-high five hits in the twinbill.
LaPorta went 4-5 with two RBI while
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) and
James Wines (Hazlet/Raritan) each contributed two hits, two runs and two RBI. Pitcher
Brandon Perna (Cherry Hill/CH West) tossed a gem, allowing just two unearned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game. Perna improved to 4-1 on the season.
In the second inning, LaPorta singled and scored the game's first run on an error. Stockton broke the contest open with six runs in the third.
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) doubled in two runs, Reedy singled in two more and
Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) and
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) stroked RBI singles as the lead grew to 7-0.
Gustites knocked an RBI single in the fifth frame, Wines followed with a two-run single and later scored an unearned run to make it 11-0 Ospreys. Kean plated unearned tallies in the sixth and ninth innings but that was it against the masterful Perna as Stockton won 11-2.
DeSenzo and
David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) each went 3-4 with a run in the nightcap. DeSenzo also notched a triple and three RBI. Pipher was 2-5 with a double, home run and three RBI while
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) and
Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) added two hits apiece.
Kean turned the tables on Stockton with three runs in the first, one in the third and three in the fourth for a 7-0 score. The Ospreys exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to pull within 7-5. DeSenzo and Swentkowski hit RBI singles and Gustites added a sacrifice fly RBI before Pipher capped the big inning with a two-run double.
Kean came right back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 11-5. DeSenzo tripled in two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 11-7 but the Cougars responded with a run in the bottom half. Pipher hit his team-leading fourth homer of the season in the seventh for a 12-8 count, however Stockton could get no closer and fell 13-8.
Stockton will play a makeup game at Rowan University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
