Glassboro, NJ – Stockton University (11-11, 3-3 NJAC) had a one-run lead into the eighth inning before Rowan University (18-9, 3-3) scored three runs and held on to edge the Ospreys 9-8. Stockton pounded out 16 hits but stranded 10 runners on base in the one-run setback
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) led a group of six Ospreys who raked two hits apiece by going 2-5 with a double, stolen base and three RBI.
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 2-5 with a double, two RBI and a run while
David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) extended his hitting streak to five games with two safeties and added an RBI and a run.
Stockton got on the board first, plating two runs in the top of the second as Gustites smacked a two-run double with two outs. The 2-0 lead was short-lived as Rowan answered with six runs on four hits and an Osprey error in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-2 score.
Stockton quickly closed the gap to 6-5 with three runs on four hits in the top of the third. A single by
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) and double by
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) set the table for a two-run double by LaPorta, who later scored during a double play.
The Ospreys tied the game 6-6 in the top of the sixth. Mann led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI single by Gustites. Stockton went ahead 7-6 the next inning. Swentkowski was hit by a pitch and Pipher and LaPorta singled before Mann earned an RBI by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.
Stockton stayed in front until the bottom of the eighth went Rowan went back on top 9-7 with three runs on four hits and an error. The Ospreys tried to battle back in their last at-bat. A pinch-hit RBI single by
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) with two outs made it 9-8 and sent the tying run to third, but a strikeout ended the game with Stockton one run short.
Starter
Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) went the first five innings, allowing six runs (two unearned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Freshmen
Nick Maglione (Hamilton/Steinert) and
Tim Rossi (Point Pleasant/Pt. Pleasant Borough) combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.
Alex Humes (Moorestown/Moorestown) pitched 1.1 innings and absorbed the loss.
