Stockton Tops Maritime 15-8

Boxscore

Throggs Neck, NY – Stockton University (12-2, 5-1 Skyline) used an eight-goal run in the first half to break away from Maritime (4-7, 2-4) and win 15-8 for its third consecutive triumph. Zack Aho (Shamong/Seneca) paced the Ospreys with a game-high four goals.

Colin Shea (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) and Mike Caposella (Wayne/DePaul Catholic) each contributed two goals and two assists while Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) tallied two goals and one assist. Caposella now has 98 career goals.

Maritime scored three goals in just 37 seconds for a quick 3-0 lead. Aho got Stockton on the board but the Privateers answered less than a minute later for a 4-1 count. Aho jump-started Stockton's run of eight straight goals and Mark Scherzer (Holmdel/Holmdel) followed 56 seconds later. Markers by Aho and Joey Tiernan (Voorhees/Eastern) gave the Ospreys their first lead at 5-4.

In the second quarter, Shea scored twice while Anderson and Jamar Hall (Logan Twp./Kingsway) each potted one counter as the advantage grew to 9-4. Maritime snapped the eight-goal run but Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) and Jon Liguori (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) found the net in the last 1:29 of the half for an 11-5 lead at the break.

Maritime staged an attempt at a rally with the first three goals of the third quarter to close the gap to 11-8. Stockton buckled down from there and netted the last four scores of the game. Caposella and Aho made it 13-8 after three. Caposella and Anderson struck 39 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter for a 15-8 lead and the Osprey defense did the rest to clinch Stockton's third straight win.

Stockton goalkeeper Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) made 18 saves, just one off his career high, in the victory. Kevin Matheny (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) chipped in defensively with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Stockton will be on the road again on Wednesday for a Skyline Conference game at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:30 p.m.
