Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-6) fought gamely but was eliminated from the NJAC Tournament by The College of New Jersey (14-1), the #1 ranked team in the nation, by a score of 9-2 in the conference semifinals.
Mary Schmid (Lumberton/Holy Cross) and
Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) scored the goals for the Ospreys.
TCNJ opened the scoring 1:18 into the game but the Ospreys held their ground and the game remained 1-0 for the next 20 minutes. The Lions rattled off three markers in 2:35 to make it 4-0. Schmid broke through for the Ospreys, hitting the net with 3:46 left in the first half, to cut the lead to 4-1 at the break.
TCNJ scored once early in the second stanza, followed by 14 scoreless minutes until the Lions netted a pair of goals 1:15 apart. Butrico scored to make it 7-2 with 7:45 remaining and TCNJ put the game away with two late scores for the 9-2 final.
Alexa Rubino (Voorhees/Eastern) and
Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) grabbed two draw controls each, with
Amanda Scarpa (Manalapan/Freehold Twp.) scooping four ground balls.
Maura Twiggs (Ocean City) made nine saves in net for Stockton.
Mia Blackman led TCNJ with five goals followed by Olivia Cleale with a goal in five assists. The Lions blanked Stockton 13 a week ago but the Ospreys played a much stronger game the second time around.
Stockton will await a possible berth in the ECAC Tournament. The ECAC selections will be made on Monday May 8, with the tournament slated for May 10, 13-14.
