Union, NJ – Stockton University (0-1) started the season on a down note as the Ospreys were overwhelmed by the University of Scranton (1-0) by a 3-0 score on Friday afternoon. Stockton was outshot 13-5 on the day with a 19-2 advantage for Scranton in corner attempts. The game was the first contest of the two-day Kean Cougar Classic.
The Royals, the defending Landmark Conference Champions, scored first at 11:20 on a Hannah DeMars header off a corner for a 1-0 lead. That margin would last until the break, as Stockton tried to mount some offense against a stifling defense.
Scranton put the game away late when Jamie Hreniuk tallied on a breakaway in the 61st minute, then Erica Licario scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to salt the game away by the 3-0 final score.
Stockton was able to fire five shots, with
Mairead McKeary squeezing off two of the attempts. Goalkeeper
Nicole Pallante faced 13 shots by the Royals and made four saves in the loss.
Colleen Berry made one save in earning her first win and shutout of the season for the Royals.
Stockton will play again tomorrow in Union against Emmanuel College on the second day of the Kean Cougar Classic. Game time is 1 pm.
