Stockton Holds Off Alvernia, 1-0

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (5-2) scored early and made the lone goal stand up to defeat Alvernia (2-5) 1-0 for the Ospreys' fourth straight win. Sarah Gawrysiak (Haddon Twp./Haddon Twp.) tallied her first goal of the season and the marker proved to be the game-winner.

Gawrysiak's goal came just 1:14 into the contest and capped a rapid-fire sequence of three quick shots. Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) fired a shot that was kicked out by Alvernia goalie Emma Beamesderfer. The rebound went to Gawrysiak, whose first attempt also was denied by Beamesderfer. The ball came right back to Gawrysiak, who converted her second try for the early 1-0 lead.

The Ospreys controlled the first half, with advantages of 9-2 in shots and 4-1 in penalty corners on the way to a 1-0 lead at the break. Alvernia came on strong at the start of the second half, generating four corners and two shots in the first eight minutes, but the Stockton defense held fast.

The play leveled off for a while before the Golden Wolves pushed forward later in the game in an effort to produce the tying goal. Stockton's last shot attempt of the night came with 21:08 remaining and the Ospreys were hemmed in their own end pretty much the rest of the way.

Stockton, which yielded eight penalty corners and six shots in the second half, fended off three penalty corners in the last 3:01 to cap a strong defensive performance. The 1-0 triumph was the team's fourth straight win and third shutout of the year.

Goalkeeper Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) made five saves to record her second shutout of the season and ninth of her career, one off the school record of 10 by Caitlin Nolan (2003-06). Beamesderfer finished with seven stops for Alvernia.

After three straight home games, Stockton will hit the road for its NJAC opener at William Paterson on Friday at 7 pm.
