Stockton Sets Record with Sixth Win in a Row

Scranton, PA – Stockton University (7-2) played its second game in less than 24 hours and outlasted Marywood (1-6) by making three out of five in a shootout for a 4-3 victory. The Ospreys set a school record with their sixth consecutive win, surpassing the mark of five straight in 2013.

Victoria Caiazzo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) scored two goals and also converted her opportunity in the shootout. Britney Stein (Ocean City/Ocean City) found the cage for the second straight game and goalkeeper Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) earned the win with a season-high 15 saves.

Marywood took the early lead just 4:32 into the game and Caiazzo answered seven minutes after with an assist by Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown). Later in the first half, Stockton surged ahead with two goals in a span of 3:43. Stein scored off a scramble in front to put the Ospreys on top 2-1 and Caiazzo added her second of the game by tapping in a rebound for a 3-1 advantage.

In the second half, Marywood fought back to tie the game with two markers 1:37 apart. Lindsay Quinn scored the first and Tori Jo Kakusian followed with the equalizer on a penalty stroke. The teams combined for the 13 shots the rest of regulation, including a failed penalty stroke by Stockton, but none resulted in a goal.

In the first overtime, Sorochynskyj made seven saves and Kakusian made four defensive saves to keep the game tied. A red card on Stockton with 3:17 left in the period left the Ospreys playing six-against-seven for the rest of the game. Marywood goalie Kerry Mountz made four saves in the second OT, including one on a penalty stroke, and Sorochynsky countered with two stops.

Caiazzo and Sarah Gawrysiak (Haddon Twp./Haddon Twp.) were successful in the first and third round of the shootout while Marywood, which went first, potted its initial and fifth tries. Massa was the final shooter in the best-of-five, and she scored on her attempt to give Stockton the dramatic 4-3 triumph.

The teams combined for 54 shots (33-21 Stockton) and 34 corners (19-15 Marywood) in the back-and-forth affair. With the win, Stockton improved to 1-1 in shootouts this season and gave head coach Sarah Elleman her 99th career victory as a college head coach.

The Ospreys will have a week off before hosting Montclair State in an NJAC game next Saturday, September 30 at 1 pm.
