Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-7, 6-4 NJAC) withstood a furious rally from Rowan University (10-6, 7-3 NJAC) and held on for an 84-77 victory on Wednesday night.
Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) led four Ospreys in double figures with 25 points and a game-high three blocks.
Williams pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked three shots in addition to her 25 points on the evening. The three rejections gave her 500 in her career, only the third player in Division III history to ever achieve the milestone. She joins Jordan Holmes (642 blocks for Denison, 2014-17) and Liz Hickey (510 blocks for Mary Washington, 2005-08) in the record books. Blocks started as an official NCAA statistic in the 1992-93 season.
Stockton started quickly posting a lead as high as eight points during the first quarter at 15-7. The Profs closed out the frame on a 12-3 run to take a 19-18 lead after one period. It was a taut affair during the second period as the teams fought for any advantage.
Rowan held the one point margin 38-37 at the break. Summer Crilley led the visitors with 16 points on 4-6 from behind the arc to help Rowan maintain the slim lead, with Williams countering with 10 markers for the Ospreys.
Stockton came out on fire in the third period, as the Ospreys shot a blistering 73.7 % (14-19) during the period, outscoring Rowan 32-15 and taking a 69-53 lead going into the final period.
Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) topped the team during the run scoring 12 points on 5-5 shooting and 2-2 from the foul line.
Rowan started the final period, ripping off the first 10 points of the fourth frame, while holding the Ospreys scoreless for the first 4:47 of the period, to close to 69-63 for Stockton. Stockton answered by tallying the next five points, three by Williams, to stretch the margin back to 76-63 with 3:39 remaining.
Rowan made one last run at the Ospreys, using a 10-1 spurt to close to within three at 80-77 with 37 seconds left, but could get no closer. Two foul shots by
Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.) and one each by
April Peterson (Lafayette/High Point) and Treadwell sealed the 84-77 victory and Stockton's third consecutive win.
Treadwell added 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while
Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) tallied 14 markers, tied her career-high with eight rebounds and swiped four steals. Porricelli rounded out the quartet with a career-high 13 points for Stockton.
Crilley led all scorers with a career-high 30 points. April Szymczyk tallied 20 points, 12 rebounds and pilfered four steals for Rowan. Dominque Peters added 17 markers for the Profs.
Stockton will travel to Mahwah for their next game against Ramapo on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 pm.
