Stockton Uses Second-Half Surge to Win 72-54

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-5, 3-3 NJAC) outscored Rutgers Newark (6-7, 1-5 NJAC) 44-23 in the second half and pulled away for a 72-54 victory on Wednesday night. The Ospreys had four players score in double figures, led by Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson), who tallied 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Head coach Joe Fussner collected his 399th career win.

Stockton started slowly as the Scarlet Raiders grabbed an early 14-10 lead after one quarter. The Ospreys struggled from the field, shooting just 5-21 (23.8%) during the first frame. The visitors kept up the pressure in the second period, leading by as many as nine points at 21-12 before Stockton closed to within one point at 25-24 with 2:53 left in the half.

Colleen Branagan (Matawan/Matawan) scored five points during the 12-4 spurt to help get Stockton back in the game. The junior hit another basket at the end of the period to get the Ospreys within three points at 31-28 at the break.

The second half was all Ospreys as they started to pull away in the third quarter. Treadwell and freshman Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.) scored six points each during the 18-10 quarter to give Stockton the lead for good at 46-41. The Ospreys then surged in the final period, putting up 26 points to 13 for the Scarlet Raiders to close out the game.

A 14-0 run in a span of 3:48 to begin the final quarter put the contest out of reach at 60-41. Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) scored six points, with Treadwell adding five markers and Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) banging in a three-pointer as the three seniors accounted for all of the points during the run. Stockton cruised home from there and finished the game winning 72-54.

In addition to Treadwell's 17 points and 12 boards, Williams chipped in by scoring 16 points and tallying game highs of 18 rebounds, four assists and six blocks. Mendolla scored 14 points while Branagan rounded out the quartet of double-figure scorers with 10 markers. Stockton held a massive 64-40 advantage on the boards for the game.

Faith Ashby led all scorers with 18 points for Rutgers Newark while teammates Nicole Skelly and Ania Harrell tallied 17 and 11 points respectively. Harrell led the Scarlet Raiders with nine rebounds and Comfort Akinbo blocked six shots to tie for game-high honors.

Stockton will take to the road for their next contest as they will face Montclair State, which is ranked #25 in this week's D3hoops.com poll, on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.
