Stockton Downed 60-52 by #25 Montclair State

Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (7-6, 3-4 NJAC) played a great first quarter but could not sustain the momentum and was overtaken by #25 Montclair State (12-1 , 7-0) in a 60-52 defeat. The Ospreys went 7-12 (58.3%) from three-point range overall and briefly led during the fourth quarter in nearly pulling the upset.

Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) and Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) each recorded double-doubles. Williams totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds while Treadwell contributed 14 points and 11 boards. Treadwell was 7-10 from the floor (70%). Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) also hit double figures with 11 markers.

Stockton got off to a torrid start, building an 18-6 lead on the strength of outstanding shooting. The Ospreys led 21-9 before a late Red Hawks' layup made it 21-11 after one quarter. Stockton shot 8-13 from floor (61.5%) including a perfect 5-5 from three-point range in the period. Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.) went 3-3 from beyond the arc for nine points to lead the charge.

Montclair State swung the pendulum the other way in the second quarter, outscoring Stockton 16-6 as the Ospreys went just 3-18 from the field (16.7%). Treadwell scored four points on 2-3 shooting and Williams sank one basket. After two disparate periods, the teams were tied 27-27 at halftime.

Stockton yielded the first seven points of the third quarter and trailed by nine later in the period. The Red Hawks then went scoreless for the last four minutes while baskets by Williams and Treadwell pulled the Ospreys within 40-35 after three.

Williams scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to vault Stockton into a 42-40 lead before a Kate Tobie free throw ended an eight-minute drought by Montclair State. Another Williams jumper later put Stockton ahead 44-42 with 4:30 to play. After the Red Hawks scored five straight points, Mendolla drained a three-pointer to tie it 47-47 with 3:15 remaining.

Stockton's upset bid stalled there as Montclair State reeled off nine straight points for a 56-47 count with 1:16 to go. Williams scored her team's last five points, including her second career three-pointer in 97 games, but the Ospreys fell 60-52.

Stockton returns home to host Stevenson University in a non-conference game at The Sports Center on Monday at 7 pm.
