Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Stockton Blanks Stevens 1-0

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-4) scored an early goal and played smothering defense to shut out Stevens (8-4) 1-0 in a non-conference home game. Casey Cordonna (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) netted the lone goal of the contest for the Ospreys.

Stockton struck quickly, scoring on a penalty corner just 1:22 into the game. Kassidy Wentzell (Hammonton/St. Joseph) started the play with a blast from the top of the arc. A deflection by Sarah Fisher (Monroeville/Woodstown) found its way to Cordonna right in front, and the sophomore knocked it home.

The goal was Cordonna's team-leading fourth of the season. The Ospreys played airtight defense all over the field for the next 68-and-a-half minutes to blank a Stevens team that was averaging 3.36 goals per game. The Ducks finished with six shots, two on goal, and five penalty corners.

Backs Cordonna, Victoria Caiazzo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional), Issy Gilhooley (Ocean City/Ocean City), Lauryn Flynn (Warren Grove/Southern Regional) and Hannah Wescoat (Upper Deerfield/Cumberland) spearheaded the defensive effort.

Stockton goalkeeper Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) was rarely tested, but rose to the task when called upon, making one save in each half to record her fourth shutout of the season. Stevens goalie Emily Franco made seven saves for the Ducks.

Stockton will play at home again on Saturday when the Ospreys host William Paterson in an NJAC game at 1 pm.
