Stockton Rallies for 1-1 Draw with #17 Montclair State

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-5-3, 3-2-2 NJAC) scored a late goal in regulation and held on for a 1-1 draw against Montclair State (13-1-2, 6-0-1 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Christian Bik (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) tallied his sixth goal of the season with 1:27 left to knot the game. The Red Hawks are ranked #17 by the United Soccer Coaches.
 
The Red Hawks carried the play during the first half but only held a 7-5 advantage on shots. The one that counted was a goal but Brogan Quigley off a free kick for the one goal margin. After a Stockton foul, Brogan's strike from 20 yards out found the back of the net at 16:23. The contest would remain at 1-0 through the rest of the period.
 
The Ospreys turned up the pressure during an exciting second half as they fired 12 shots with five on net. Stockton had three good opportunities but were turned away each time. Larry Abanilla (Union/Union Catholic), in the 27th minute, fired a blast that was kicked out by Montclair State net minder Mike Saalfrank.
 
Three minutes later Eucario Solano (Galloway/Absegami) had a free kick stopped, then John Maxted (Middletown/Middletown North had a shot saved at 9:05. Bik then cashed in for the Ospreys to forge the tie at 1-1.
 
With time winding down in regulation, the Red Hawks were called for a foul setting up a free kick for Stockton from 25 yards away. Bik made it count as his shot curled in the lower right corner to knot the match and send in to extra time.
 
Montclair State had the better of the play during the first overtime with Kevin Simek getting a shot off that was kicked out by Stockton goalie Michael Lescano (Union/St. Benedict's Prep). The Red Hawks also had a trio of chances in the second extra period but came away empty. Two attempts were blocked the Ospreys defense, another sailed wide and the match ended in the 1-1 draw.
 
Solano and Villy Fortulus (Winslow Twp./Winslow Twp.) had four shots apiece to lead the Ospreys on the day, with Simek firing five attempts for the visitors, including three on net.
 
Lescano kicked out five shots, in helping Stockton to their second straight tie in conference play. His counterpart Saalfrank made seven saves in net.
 
Stockton will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to St. David's, PA to face Eastern on Monday afternoon for their next match. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
