Stockton Wins Twice at Stevens

Hoboken, NJ – Stockton University (23-6) won both of its matches on the second day of the Stevens Invitational to finish with a 2-2 record at the tournament. The Ospreys downed Haverford (7-15) 3-1 and then swept the host Ducks (20-6) 3-0. Allie Desmond (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) led Stockton with 16 kills in each match.
 
Desmond was the only player with a double-digit kill total against Haverford with 16, followed by Julie Kohlhoff (West Islip, NY/West Islip) with nine kills. Emily Sullivan (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) handed out 28 assists and added eight digs, four kills and three aces. Natalie Miller (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) scooped a match-high 20 digs.
 
The Ospreys started slow, dropping the first set 25-17 and falling behind 19-12 in the second set. They still trailed 23-19 before reeling off six straight points, the last two on kills by Desmond, to even the match with a 25-23 win. Stockton scored the first four markers of the third set and rolled from there, taking the next two sets 25-19 and 25-11 to win the match.
 
Desmond again led all players with 16 kills in the sweep of Stevens, which is in the Others Receiving Votes category of the AVCA national top 25 poll. Kohlhoff contributed seven kills for the Ospreys, who committed just seven hitting errors in the match (.296 hitting percentage).
 
Sullivan and Alice Brandt (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) dished 25 and 13 assists respectively. Miller topped the Ospreys with 16 digs followed by freshman Caity Ullmer (Midland Park/Midland Park) with a career-high 15 digs.
 
Stockton rallied from a 21-18 deficit to capture the first set 25-23 as Desmond spiked two kills during the clinching 7-2 run. The second stanza went back and forth and was tied at 24 when Stockton prevailed 26-24 on kills by Ullmer and Desmond. The Ospreys built and 11-6 lead in the third set and closed out the win 25-15.
 
Stockton's next match will be an NJAC contest at William Paterson on Tuesday at 7 pm.
