Hackettstown, NJ – Stockton University (11-3-3) took on Centenary University (8-7) in a non-conference match and came away with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon. Three different players tallied goals for the Ospreys, as they have now won five of their last six matches.
Â
The first half started with the Cyclones getting an own goal for a quick 1-0 lead at 3:29. The home team served a corner kick into the box that glanced off a Stockton player into the net and a one-goal advantage. That score was quickly erased as
Salena LeDonne (Parsippany/Parsippany) knotted the contest 1:39 later.
Â
LeDonne broke loose and after a long run, potted her team-leading eighth goal of the season for the 1-1 draw. The Ospreys, spurred on by the tally, turned up the heat on the Cyclones the rest of the period. They outshot Centenary by a massive margin of 16-1, with 10 attempts on net, but could not come away with another score. The half ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Â
Stockton kept up the pressure to begin the second half and cashed in five minutes into the frame.
Susan Porambo (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) scored her fifth goal of the season to make it 2-1.
Kiersten Reszkowski (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) fired a shot that was kicked out and in the ensuing scramble, Porambo gathered the ball and gave the Ospreys the one-goal margin.
Â
The Ospreys added an insurance tally in the 61st minute for a 3-1 lead.
Alexa Simonetti (Wayne/Wayne Valley) converted a corner kick for her fifth marker of the year from
Michelle Sander (Ewing/Notre Dame) for the two-goal advantage. It was Sander's team-leading fourth assist of the year.
Â
The Cyclones would not relent as they hit a cross bar in the 75th minute, then drew one goal closer at 79:42. After a Stockton foul, Kara LaPolice fired her fourth goal of the season into the net to slice the margin to one marker. Centenary could not get the equalizer as Stockton kept them off the board the rest of the way and the final score was set at 3-2
Â
Stockton finished the contest out shooting Centenary by a wide margin of 30-3 with 23 on goal. LeDonne fired six shots on net, with Reszkowski adding four more attempts on goal. The Osprey defense stopped a six-match winning streak by the Cyclones.
Â
Goalkeeper
Nicole Pallante (Brick/Brick Twp.) only faced three shots during the game but did not have to make a save in earning her 11th win of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Colt made a career-high 20 saves for Centenary.
