Stockton Rallies for OT Win in Resumed Game

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Stockton University (10-4) rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over Gwynedd Mercy (9-5) in a game that was resumed today after being suspended due to lightning on September 26. The Ospreys trailed 1-0 when the game was halted three weeks ago but scored twice once the contest was restarted.

Victoria Caiazzo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) scored the game-winning goal in OT after Jennelle Long (Matawan/Matawan) tallied the tying goal as Stockton made the most of its second chance.

The victory gave Stockton, which is seventh in NCAA South Atlantic region rankings released today, a double-digit win total for just the third time in the program's 16 seasons.

Back on September 26, the Griffins dominated the first half with advantages of 5-1 in shots and 7-0 in corners on the way to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lauren Jani with 9:33 on the clock. A lightning delay of just over an hour caused the game to be suspended with 27:10 remaining in the second half.

Play resumed this evening and Stockton tied the game on Long's fourth goal of the season with 10:35 remaining in regulation. The Ospreys then fended off two penalty corners and two shots by Gwynedd Mercy down the stretch, and the match went to overtime.

Stockton was on the defensive throughout the OT as the Griffins registered four shots and two corners. Ospreys' goalkeeper Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) made three saves to extend the game. Two of the stops came less than 30 seconds before Caiazzo scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to lift Stockton to the 2-1 victory. Kassidy Wentzell (Hammonton/St. Joseph's) assisted on the tally.

Stockton prevailed despite being outshot 12-5 and out-cornered by a whopping 13-1 overall. Gilligan earned the win with seven saves.

Stockton will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday when the Ospreys host Ramapo in an NJAC matchup at 1 pm.
